The dispute involving the sheep and the field: 

A group of sheep entered a man’s field at night and damaged his crops. The two owners brought their dispute to Prophet Dawud (AS) for judgment.

Prophet Dawud’s judgment:

Prophet Dawud (AS) judged that the owner of the damaged field should receive the sheep as compensation for the loss. His judgment was valid, but Allah gave Sulaiman (AS) a deeper understanding of the case.

Prophet Sulaiman’s wiser solution:

Sulaiman (AS) suggested that the owner of the field benefit from the sheep’s milk and offspring, while the owner of the sheep restored the damaged field. Once the field returned to its original condition, each owner would receive his property back.

Allah says in Surah Al-Anbiya:

وَدَاوُودَ وَسُلَيْمَانَ إِذْ يَحْكُمَانِ فِي الْحَرْثِ إِذْ نَفَشَتْ فِيهِ غَنَمُ الْقَوْمِ وَكُنَّا لِحُكْمِهِمْ شَاهِدِينَ (78) فَفَهَّمْنَاهَا سُلَيْمَانَ ۚ وَكُلًّا آتَيْنَا حُكْمًا وَعِلْمًا ۚ وَسَخَّرْنَا مَعَ دَاوُودَ الْجِبَالَ يُسَبِّحْنَ وَالطَّيْرَ ۚ وَكُنَّا فَاعِلِينَ (79)

Wa-Dāwūda wa-Sulaymāna ‘idh yaḥkumāni fī-l-ḥarthi ‘idh nafashat fīhi ghanamu-l-qawmi wa-kunnā li-ḥukmihim shāhidīn.

Fa-fahhamnāhā Sulaymāna wa-kullan ‘ātaynā ḥukman wa-ilman wa-sakhkharnā maa Dāwūda-l-jibāla yusabbiḥna wat-ṭayra wa-kunnā fā`ilīn.

“And [remember] David and Solomon when they judged concerning the field, when the sheep of the people had grazed therein at night. And We were witness to their judgment. So We gave Solomon understanding of it, and to each We gave judgment and knowledge.” 

(Surah Al-Anbiyaa 78–79)

The Miracles Of Prophet Sulaiman

1. Command Over The Wind

Allah gave Prophet Sulaiman (AS) control over the wind, allowing it to travel by his command. The Quran says:

وَلِسُلَيْمَانَ الرِّيحَ غُدُوُّهَا شَهْرٌ وَرَوَاحُهَا شَهْرٌ ۖ

Wa-li-Sulaymāna-r-rīḥa ghuduwuhā shahrun wa-rawāḥuhā shahr

“And for Solomon We subjected the wind, its morning course was a month, and its afternoon course was a month.”
(Surah Saba 12)

2. Control Over The Jinn

Allah also subjected the jinn to Prophet Sulaiman (AS). They worked by Allah’s permission, building structures and performing difficult tasks for him.

وَمِنَ الْجِنِّ مَن يَعْمَلُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِ ۖ

Wa-mina-l-jinni man ya‘malu bayna yadayhi bi-’idhni rabbih

“And of the jinn were those who worked before him by permission of his Lord.”
(Surah Saba 12)

3. Understanding The Speech Of Birds And Animals

One of Prophet Sulaiman’s (AS) remarkable gifts was understanding the speech of birds and other creatures. He said:

وَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ عُلِّمْنَا مَنطِقَ الطَّيْرِ وَأُوتِينَا مِن كُلِّ شَيْءٍ ۖ

Wa-qāla yā-‘ayyuhā-n-nāsu ‘ullimnā manṭiqa-ṭ-ṭayri wa-‘ūtīnā min kulli shay’

“O people, we have been taught the language of birds, and we have been given from everything.”
(Surah An-Naml 16)

4. The Flowing Copper

Allah also provided Prophet Sulaiman (AS) with a source of flowing copper that he could use for his kingdom and its works.

وَأَسَلْنَا لَهُ عَيْنَ الْقِطْرِ ۖ

Wa-’asalnā lahū ‘ayna-l-qiṭr

“And We caused a spring of molten copper to flow for him.”
(Surah Saba 12)

5. Blessings From Allah

“This is from the favor of my Lord, to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful.”

1. Prophet Sulaiman’s Army

“And gathered for Solomon were his soldiers of the jinn and mankind and birds, and they were [marching] in rows.”

As the army reached the Valley of the Ants, one ant warned the others to enter their homes so they would not be accidentally crushed by Sulaiman and his soldiers.

حَتَّىٰ إِذَا أَتَوْا عَلَىٰ وَادِ النَّمْلِ قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّمْلُ ادْخُلُوا مَسَاكِنَكُمْ لَا يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ سُلَيْمَانُ وَجُنُودُهُ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ

Ḥattā ‘idhā ‘ataw ‘alā wādi-n-namli qālat namlatun yā-‘ayyuhā-n-namlu-dkhulū masākinakum lā yaḥṭimannakum Sulaymānu wa-junūduhū wa-hum lā yash’urūn.

“Until, when they came upon the valley of the ants, an ant said, ‘O ants, enter your dwellings lest Solomon and his soldiers crush you while they do not perceive’.”
(Surah An-Naml 18)

3. Prophet Sulaiman Hearing The Ant

By Allah’s special blessing, Prophet Sulaiman (AS) understood what the ant said. This was one of the remarkable signs Allah had given him.

4. His Smile And Gratitude To Allah

Sulaiman (AS) smiled when he heard the ant and immediately thanked Allah for His blessings. He prayed:

رَبِّ أَوْزِعْنِي أَنْ أَشْكُرَ نِعْمَتَكَ الَّتِي أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَىٰ وَالِدَيَّ وَأَنْ أَعْمَلَ صَالِحًا تَرْضَاهُ

Rabbi ‘awzi‘nī ‘an ‘ashkura ni‘mataka-l-latī ‘an‘amta ‘alayya wa-‘alā wālidayya wa-‘an ‘a‘mala Ṣāliḥan tarḍāh

“My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteousness of which You approve.”
(Surah An-Naml 19)

The story of Prophet Sulaiman (AS), the Hoopoe, and the Queen of Sheba is one of the most remarkable stories in the Quran. It shows Sulaiman’s wisdom, leadership, and concern for calling people to worship Allah alone.

1. Prophet Sulaiman Notices The Missing Hoopoe

While inspecting his army, Prophet Sulaiman (AS) noticed that the Hoopoe was missing. He asked why he could not see the bird and said that it must provide a clear reason for its absence.

وَتَفَقَّدَ الطَّيْرَ فَقَالَ مَا لِيَ لَا أَرَى الْهُدْهُدَ أَمْ كَانَ مِنَ الْغَائِبِينَ

Wa-tafaqqaḍa-ṭ-ṭayra fa-qāla mā liya lā ‘ara-l-hudhuda ‘am kāna mina-l-ghā’ibīn

“And he took attendance of the birds and said, ‘Why do I not see the hoopoe, or is he among the absent?’”
(Surah An-Naml 20)

2. The Hoopoe Brings News From Sheba

The Hoopoe soon returned with important news. It told Prophet Sulaiman (AS) that it had discovered a powerful kingdom ruled by a woman and that she had been given a magnificent throne.

أَحَطتُ بِمَا لَمْ تُحِطْ بِهِ وَجِئْتُكَ مِن سَبَإٍ بِنَبَإٍ يَقِينٍ

Aḥaṭtu bimā lam tuḥiṭ bihī wa-ji’tuka min Saba’in bi-naba’in yaqīn

“I have discovered what you have not discovered, and I have come to you from Sheba with certain news.”
(Surah An-Naml 22)

3. The People Of Sheba Worship The Sun

The Hoopoe explained that the Queen of Sheba and her people worshipped the sun instead of Allah. Prophet Sulaiman (AS) wanted to verify the report before taking action.

وَجَدتُّهَا وَقَوْمَهَا يَسْجُدُونَ لِلشَّمْسِ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ

Wajadtuhā wa-qawmahā yasjudūna lish-shamsi min dūni-l-Lāh

“I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allah.”
(Surah An-Naml 24)

4. Prophet Sulaiman Sends A Letter To The Queen

After confirming the news, Prophet Sulaiman (AS) sent the Queen a letter calling her and her people to submit to Allah.

إِنَّهُ مِن سُلَيْمَانَ وَإِنَّهُ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Innahū min Sulaymāna wa-‘innahū Bismi-l-Lāhi-r-Raḥmāni-r-Raḥīm.

“Indeed, it is from Solomon, and indeed, it is in the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.”
(Surah An-Naml 30)

5. The Queen Of Sheba Consults Her People

The Queen read the letter and consulted her leaders. Rather than making a rushed decision, she considered the situation carefully and discussed it with her people.

أَيُّهَا الْمَلَأُ أَفْتُونِي فِي أَمْرِي مَا كُنتُ قَاطِعَةً أَمْرًا حَتَّىٰ تَشْهَدُونِ

Yā-‘ayyuhā-l-mala’u ‘aftūnī fī ‘amrī mā kuntu qāṭi‘atan ‘amran ḥattā tash-hadūn

“O chiefs, advise me in my affair. I would not decide a matter until you witness it with me.”
(Surah An-Naml 32)

6. The Queen Visits Prophet Sulaiman

The Queen eventually decided to go to Prophet Sulaiman (AS). She recognized that his message was not simply about worldly power but about submitting to Allah.

7. The Throne And The Glass Palace

Before the Queen arrived, Allah showed another remarkable sign of His power through Sulaiman (AS). Her throne was brought before him, and later she entered a magnificent palace with a glass floor that appeared to be water.

قِيلَ لَهَا ادْخُلِي الصَّرْحَ ۖ فَلَمَّا رَأَتْهُ حَسِبَتْهُ لُجَّةً وَكَشَفَتْ عَن سَاقَيْهَا ۚ

Qīla lahā-dkhulī-ṣ-ṣarḥa falammā ra’athū ḥasibat-hu lujjatan wa-kashafat ‘an sāqayhā

“It was said to her, ‘Enter the palace.’ But when she saw it, she thought it was a body of water and uncovered her legs.”
(Surah An-Naml 44)

8. The Queen Of Sheba Submits To Allah

After witnessing these signs and recognizing the truth, the Queen turned to Allah and declared her submission.

قَالَتْ رَبِّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي وَأَسْلَمْتُ مَعَ سُلَيْمَانَ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

Qālat Rabbi ‘innī ẓalamtu nafsī wa-‘aslamtu ma‘a Sulaymāna lillāhi Rabbi-l-‘ālamīn

“My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, and I submit with Solomon to Allah, Lord of the worlds.”
(Surah An-Naml 44)

Prophet Sulaiman (AS) died while leaning on his staff. His body remained standing, so the jinn continued their work without realizing that he had passed away.

فَلَمَّا قَضَيْنَا عَلَيْهِ الْمَوْتَ مَا دَلَّهُمْ عَلَىٰ مَوْتِهِ إِلَّا دَابَّةُ الْأَرْضِ تَأْكُلُ مِنسَأَتَهُ ۖ

Fa-lammā qaḍaynā ‘alayhi-l-mawta mā dallahum ‘alā mawtihī ’illā dābbatu-l-’arḍi ta’kulu minsa’atah

“Then, when We decreed his death, nothing indicated to them his death except a creature of the earth eating his staff.”
(Surah Saba 14)

A creature from the earth gradually ate away at Sulaiman’s staff. When the staff could no longer support him, his body fell, revealing that he had already died.

The jinn only realized that Prophet Sulaiman (AS) had died when he fell to the ground. They had continued working because they did not know about his death.
