Quran Stories
Some stories hold every human emotion within a single journey—love, jealousy, loss, patience, and ultimate relief. The story of Prophet Yusuf unfolds with this rare depth, drawing children into a narrative where hardship and hope exist side by side, shaping a lasting understanding of faith.
From a childhood dream to betrayal, imprisonment, and eventual authority, Yusuf’s life reveals how every trial serves a greater purpose. His unwavering character and trust in Allah lead to forgiveness and fulfillment, showing children that patience always carries a meaningful reward.
1. Prophet Yusuf Sees a Dream That Changes Everything
Prophet Yusuf was the beloved son of Prophet Yaqub , grandson of Prophet Ishaq, and great-grandson of Prophet Ibrahim . One night, as a young boy, he saw a remarkable dream: eleven stars, the sun, and the moon all prostrating before him.
He went immediately to his father and described what he had seen. Prophet Yaqub understood at once that this was a true vision from Allah, a sign that his son had been chosen for prophethood.
He was overjoyed. But he was also concerned, knowing his older sons’ jealousy toward Yusuf, and he gave his son one important instruction: keep this dream between us.
“إِذْ قَالَ يُوسُفُ لِأَبِيهِ يَا أَبَتِ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَحَدَ عَشَرَ كَوْكَبًا وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ رَأَيْتُهُمْ لِي سَاجِدِينَ” {4}
Idh qāla Yūsufu li’abīhi yā abati innī ra’aytu aḥada ‘ashara kawkaban wash-shamsa wal-qamara ra’aytuhum lī sājidīn.
[Of these stories mention] when Joseph said to his father, “O my father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me.” {4}
For children, this opening carries an immediate lesson: not every blessing should be shared with everyone. Some gifts are protected by keeping them close to the heart and to Allah ﷻ.

2. The Brothers’ Jealousy Leads to a Terrible Plan
Prophet Yusuf’s ten older half-brothers had long harbored jealousy toward him. Their father’s love for Yusuf was visible, and rather than seeking to earn their father’s affection through good character, they allowed resentment to grow into a dangerous plan.
They convinced their father to let Prophet Yusuf accompany them to the fields, promising to watch over him. As soon as they were far from home, they removed his shirt, threw him into a deep dry well, and left him there.
On the way home, they slaughtered a goat, stained his shirt with blood, and wept false tears before their father, claiming a wolf had killed his beloved son.
Prophet Yaqub did not believe them. He turned to Allah ﷻ with patient grief, saying that beautiful patience was his only response.
For children, this moment shows that jealousy, when it is not fought and replaced with gratitude, can lead people to actions they can never take back.
3. A Caravan Rescues Prophet Yusuf from the Well
While Prophet Yusuf waited in the darkness of the well, a caravan of traders passed by. They lowered their bucket to draw water and were astonished to find a young boy. They pulled him out and recognized that they had found something valuable.
The traders hid him with their merchandise and sold him at the slave market in Egypt for a few pieces of silver.
The governor of Egypt, known as Al-Aziz, came to the market and was struck by the remarkable young man before him.
He outbid everyone, brought Prophet Yusuf home, and told his wife that this boy would be of great benefit to them.
In this moment of apparent disaster, Allah ﷻ had already set the next stage of His plan in motion. The well was not an ending. It was a transition.
A child who understands this reads every hardship in their own life differently, knowing that what looks like abandonment is often Allah ﷻ moving the pieces of a greater plan into place.

Prophet Yusuf grew in Al-Aziz’s household into an exceptionally wise, knowledgeable, and handsome young man. The Prophet Muhammad mentioned during the night journey that he saw Prophet Yusuf in the third heaven and described him as having been given half of all beauty.
Allah ﷻ says about his growth:
“وَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُ آتَيْنَاهُ حُكْمًا وَعِلْمًا ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الْمُحْسِنِينَ” {22}
Wa-lammā balagha ashuddahu ātaynāhu ḥukman wa-‘ilman, wa-kadhālika najzī al-muḥsinīn.
And when Joseph reached maturity, We gave him judgment and knowledge. And thus We reward the doers of good. {22}
Then came the great test. The wife of Al-Aziz, known in Islamic tradition as Zulaikha, was overwhelmed by her feelings for Prophet Yusuf and sought to seduce him. He refused completely, seeking refuge in Allah ﷻ.
He said with clarity that he could never commit such a betrayal against the man who had treated him with honor and generosity.
She ran after him, grabbed his shirt from behind, and tore it. At the door, they encountered Al-Aziz himself. She accused Prophet Yusuf immediately.
But a witness in the household pointed out a decisive proof: if the shirt was torn from the front, she was telling the truth. If it was torn from the back, he was innocent. The shirt was torn from the back. Prophet Yusuf was innocent.
For children, this moment teaches that when a person refuses what is wrong for the sake of Allah ﷻ, Allah protects their truth and their honor, even when the accusation seems overwhelming.
5. Prison Becomes the Place Where Allah Prepares Prophet Yusuf
Despite being found innocent, Prophet Yusuf was imprisoned to protect Al-Aziz’s household reputation.
He entered prison not as a guilty man but as a man of principle whose presence had become inconvenient for those in power.
“قَالَ رَبِّ السِّجْنُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِمَّا يَدْعُونَنِي إِلَيْهِ ۖ وَإِلاَّ تَصْرِفْ عَنِّي كَيْدَهُنَّ أَصْبُ إِلَيْهِنَّ وَأَكُن مِّنَ الْجَاهِلِينَ” {33}
Qāla rabbi as-sijnu aḥabbu ilayya mimmā yad‘ūnanī ilayhi, wa-illā taṣrif ‘annī kaydahunna aṣbu ilayhinna wa-akun mina al-jāhilīn.
He said, “My Lord, prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me. And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be among the ignorant.” {33}
In prison, he met two other inmates who each had a dream. One dreamed he was serving wine to a king. The other dreamed that birds were eating bread from a basket on his head.
Prophet Yusuf interpreted both dreams accurately: the first man would be released and serve the king again, and the second would be executed.
Before interpreting the dreams, he called both men to tawhid, to the worship of Allah alone. Even in prison, his mission as a prophet never paused.
He asked the man who would be released to mention him to the king. But the man forgot for several years.
Prophet Yusuf remained patient, and Allah ﷻ kept him there until the precise moment His plan required his release.
6. The King’s Dream Opens the Door to Freedom
The King of Egypt had a disturbing dream: seven fat cows being eaten by seven thin ones, and seven green ears of grain followed by seven dry ones.
None of his advisors could interpret it. The man who had been released from prison finally remembered Prophet Yusuf and told the king about his remarkable ability.
Prophet Yusuf interpreted the dream from prison: Egypt would enjoy seven years of abundance, followed by seven years of severe drought. He advised saving grain in its stalks during the good years to survive the lean years, with one year of relief to follow.
The king was so impressed that he ordered Prophet Yusuf’s immediate release and wanted him brought to court.
But Prophet Yusuf refused to leave until his innocence was publicly established. He asked the king to investigate the matter of the women who had cut their hands. The women testified to his innocence.
Zulaikha herself finally confessed: she had been the one who sought to seduce him and he was completely truthful.
Prophet Yusuf left prison with his innocence established before all of Egypt, not just freed but vindicated.
For children, this is one of the most powerful moments in the entire story of the prophet Yusuf for kids: he insisted on the truth being known before accepting his freedom. Dignity before comfort.
“وَقَالَ الْمَلِكُ ائْتُونِي بِهِ أَسْتَخْلِصْهُ لِنَفْسِي ۖ فَلَمَّا كَلَّمَهُ قَالَ إِنَّكَ الْيَوْمَ لَدَيْنَا مَكِينٌ أَمِينٌ” {54}
Wa-qāla al-maliku’tūnī bihī astakhliṣhu linafsī falammā kallamahu qāla innaka al-yawma ladaynā makīnun amīn.
And the king said, “Bring him to me; I will take him for myself.” And when he had spoken to him, he said, “Indeed, you are today established [in position] and trusted with us.” {54}

7. Prophet Yusuf Becomes the Most Powerful Man in Egypt
Prophet Yusuf was appointed by the king as overseer of all of Egypt’s storehouses.
He had gone from the bottom of a well to slavery, to prison, to the highest position in the land. Every apparent disaster had been a step in Allah’s plan.
“وَكَذَٰلِكَ مَكَّنَّا لِيُوسُفَ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَتَبَوَّأُ مِنْهَا حَيْثُ يَشَاءُ ۚ نُصِيبُ بِرَحْمَتِنَا مَن نَّشَاءُ ۖ وَلَا نُضِيعُ أَجْرَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ” {56}
Wa-kadhālika makkannā li-Yūsufa fī al-arḍi yatabawwa’u minhā ḥaythu yashā’u, nuṣību bi-raḥmatinā man nashā’u wa-lā nuḍī‘u ajra al-muḥsinīn.
And thus We established Joseph in the land to settle therein wherever he willed. We touch with Our mercy whom We will, and We do not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good. {56}
He managed Egypt’s resources with extraordinary wisdom during the seven years of abundance, storing grain carefully across the land. When the seven years of drought arrived, Egypt was the only nation prepared.
People came from surrounding lands to purchase grain, including from Canaan, where Prophet Yaqub and his remaining sons lived.
This is the moment every child listening to the Prophet Yusuf story for kids has been waiting for: his brothers arrived in Egypt, unaware that the powerful official before them was the brother they had thrown into a well years earlier.

Prophet Yusuf’s brothers came to Egypt seeking grain during the drought. They stood before him and did not recognize him. He recognized them immediately.
“وَجَاءَ إِخْوَةُ يُوسُفَ فَدَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ فَعَرَفَهُمْ وَهُمْ لَهُ مُنكِرُونَ” {58}
Wa-jā’a ikhwatu Yūsufa fadakhalū ‘alayhi fa-‘arafahum wa-hum lahū munkirūn.
And the brothers of Joseph came [to Egypt], and they entered upon him; and he recognized them, but he was to them unknown. {58}
He gave them their supplies but told them that next time they must bring their youngest brother, Binyamin, or he would not receive them. He also secretly returned their payment in their bags, a gesture of generosity they would only discover when they arrived home.
When they told their father, Prophet Yaqub was reluctant to send Binyamin. He had already lost one beloved son and feared losing another. But the drought deepened, and the need became urgent.
With deep grief and complete reliance on Allah ﷻ, he sent Binyamin with them, asking Allah to be the best of guardians over his sons.

9. Prophet Yusuf Reveals Himself and Reunites with His Family
When Binyamin arrived with his brothers in Egypt, Prophet Yusuf took him aside privately and told him, “I am your brother.” Do not grieve over what they have done.
He devised a way to keep Binyamin in Egypt using a legal stratagem, placing the King’s measuring cup in Binyamin’s bag and then announcing that the one in whose bag the cup was found would be held as a penalty.
The brothers were shaken. They returned to their father with the news, and the grief of Prophet Yaqub intensified so deeply that he lost his sight from weeping.
He never stopped trusting Allah ﷻ. He said:
“قَالَ إِنَّمَا أَشْكُو بَثِّي وَحُزْنِي إِلَى اللَّهِ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَ اللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ” {86}
Qāla innamā ashkū baththī wa-ḥuznī ilā Allāhi wa-a‘lamu mina Allāhi mā lā ta‘lamūn.
He said, “I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you do not know.” {86}
When the brothers returned a final time in desperation, Prophet Yusuf could no longer contain himself. He cleared the room and said, “I am Yusuf.”
And this is my brother. Allah has been gracious to us. The brothers were stunned, overwhelmed, and ashamed.

10. Prophet Yusuf Forgives His Brothers and the Dream Is Fulfilled
Prophet Yusuf did not use his power to punish his brothers. He said to them words that every Muslim child should know by heart:
“قَالَ لَا تَثْرِيبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْيَوْمَ ۖ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ ۖ وَهُوَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ” {92}
Qāla lā tathrība ‘alaykumu al-yawma yaghfiru Allāhu lakum wa-huwa arḥamu ar-rāḥimīn.
He said, “No blame will there be upon you today. Allah will forgive you; and He is the most merciful of the merciful.” {92}
He sent his shirt to his father and told the brothers to place it over Prophet Yaqub’s face. When they did, his sight returned. The entire family came to Egypt, and when Prophet Yaqub and his sons and wives entered, they all prostrated before Prophet Yusuf in honor.
The dream of eleven stars, the sun, and the moon prostrating before him, seen by a young boy decades earlier, was fulfilled exactly as Allah ﷻ had shown.
Prophet Yusuf raised his hands in gratitude and said:
“رَبِّ قَدْ آتَيْتَنِي مِنَ الْمُلْكِ وَعَلَّمْتَنِي مِن تَأْوِيلِ الْأَحَادِيثِ ۚ فَاطِرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ أَنتَ وَلِيِّي فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ ۖ تَوَفَّنِي مُسْلِمًا وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالصَّالِحِينَ” {101}
Rabbi qad ātaytanī mina al-mulki wa‘allamtanī min ta’wīli al-aḥādīth, fāṭira as-samāwāti wal-arḍi anta waliyyī fī ad-dunyā wal-ākhirah, tawaffanī musliman wa-alḥiqnī biṣ-ṣāliḥīn.
My Lord, You have given me [something] of sovereignty and taught me of the interpretation of dreams. Creator of the heavens and earth, You are my protector in this world and in the Hereafter. Cause me to die a Muslim and join me with the righteous. {101}
