Quran Stories
The story of Zulqarnain in the Quran for kids teaches us something beautiful: true strength is not about power or gold; it is about using every gift Allah gives you to help others and to stay humble.
Zulqarnain was a mighty traveler and ruler whom Allah blessed with great power, yet he never once boasted about it.
If your child loves stories about kind and powerful leaders who trusted Allah completely, this is one to read together slowly, pausing at every journey.
To help your child understand the deeper meaning behind verses like these, Kids Learning Quran Academy provides the Quran Tafseer for Kids course that walks little learners through each Surah with simple, age-appropriate explanations.
Allah Gave Zulqarnain Power and the Means to Travel
Zulqarnain was not a king like other kings. Allah gave him strength, knowledge, and the means to travel across the whole earth. He used everything he had for good, never for pride.

Allah tells us this clearly in the Quran, and this short introduction is the perfect place to begin the ayah before the story unfolds.
Inna makkanna lahu fil-ardi wa ataynahu min kulli shay’in sababa
“Indeed, We established him upon the earth, and We gave him to everything a way.” (Al-Kahf 18:84)
The scholars explain that Allah did not just hand Zulqarnain power, He gave him “asbab,” meaning real, working means that actually led to results.
Not everyone who is given some tool knows how to use it well, and not everyone who wants something is given the tool for it. Zulqarnain had both: the ability and the will to use it correctly.
That combination, real means used the right way, is what let him conquer distant lands, build a great and organized army, and reach the farthest corners of the earth, from where the sun sets to where it rises.
How Zulqarnain Traveled to the West
The story of Zulqarnain in the Quran for kids really begins here, with his very first journey. Zulqarnain packed his tools and his people and traveled far, far to the west, following the sun with his eyes.
He walked and walked until he reached the very edge of the land, where the sun seemed to disappear into the water.
What Zulqarnain Found at the Setting Place of the Sun
When Zulqarnain finally reached the western edge of the earth, he saw something amazing. It looked, from where he stood, as if the sun were sinking into a dark, muddy spring.
Hatta idha balagha maghribash-shamsi wajadaha taghrubu fi ‘aynin hami’ah
“Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it setting in a spring of dark, murky water.” (Al-Kahf 18:86)
This is simply how the sun looks to anyone standing on a shore with the sea stretching out toward the horizon; the sun appears to sink right into the water, even though it is, in truth, extremely high above the earth.

It only looks that way because of where Zulqarnain was standing.
There he met a group of people. Some of them were kind and believed in Allah, and some of them were unkind and did wrong.
How Zulqarnain Ruled the People With Justice
Allah told Zulqarnain he could punish the wrongdoers or treat everyone with goodness. This was a real test of his character. Would he use his power gently, or harshly?
Allah only gave Zulqarnain this choice because the people there were disbelievers or wrongdoers in some way; had they been true believers, punishing them would never have been an option at all.
That Zulqarnain was even trusted with this choice, and handled it so wisely, is part of why the Quran praises him.
Zulqarnain answered with justice, not cruelty. He said the wrongdoers would face their consequences, but he promised ease and kindness for anyone who believed and did good, exactly as Allah describes in the verses that follow this scene.

After his time in the west, Zulqarnain set out again, this time toward the east, to where the sun rises each morning. He met another group of people there, living very simply, with barely any shelter from the sun.
These eastern people had no covering to shield them from the sun, either because they hadn’t built proper shelters, being very simple and undeveloped in their way of living, or because in their land the sun barely ever truly set, much like certain regions of eastern Africa.
Whichever the reason, this too was something Allah already knew and had planned, and He surrounded Zulqarnain’s entire journey, everywhere he went, with His full knowledge.
Everywhere Zulqarnain went, Allah’s knowledge surrounded him. Nothing about his travels was hidden from His care.

How a People Asked Zulqarnain for Protection From Yajuj and Majuj
On his third and final journey, Zulqarnain reached a narrow pass between two tall mountains. There he found a gentle, weak people who could barely understand any language.
These people were suffering. Two destructive tribes called Yajuj and Majuj kept raiding their land, and they were desperate for help, so they came to Zulqarnain with an offer.
Qalu ya Dhal-Qarnayni inna Ya’juja wa Ma’juja mufsidoona fil-ardi fahal naj’alu laka kharjan ‘ala an taj’ala baynana wa baynahum saddan
“They said, ‘O Zulqarnain, indeed Yajuj and Majuj are causing corruption on the earth. So may we assign for you a payment on the condition that you make between us and them a barrier?'” (Al-Kahf 18:94)
Their offer of payment tells us something important, too: these people knew they could not build a wall like this on their own. They recognized that only Zulqarnain had the strength and ability to do it, so they were willing to pay him for it.

How Zulqarnain Built a Barrier of Iron and Molten Copper
Zulqarnain kindly refused their payment. He only asked for their strength and hard work, not their money, because he trusted that whatever Allah had already given him was better than any reward.
He asked the people to bring him sheets of iron, and step by step, a huge wall took shape between the two mountains.
Atooni zubaral-hadid, hatta idha sawa baynas-sadafayn qala unfukhoo, hatta idha ja’alahu naran qala atooni ufrigh ‘alayhi qitra
“‘Bring me sheets of iron’ – until, when he had leveled between the two mountain sides, he said, ‘Blow [with bellows],’ until when he had made it a fire, he said, ‘Bring me, I will pour over it molten copper.'” (Al-Kahf 18:96)

Once finished, the wall was so strong that Yajuj and Majuj could not climb over it or dig through it.

Zulqarnain Gave Allah the Credit for His Success
After finishing this enormous project, Zulqarnain could have bragged about his cleverness. Instead, he said something every child should remember.
Hadha rahmatun min Rabbi
“This is a mercy from my Lord.” (Al-Kahf 18:98)
This is the mark of righteous, God-fearing leaders: whenever Allah blesses them with something great, it only increases their gratitude and their recognition that the blessing came from Him.
Zulqarnain reminded everyone that his strength, his knowledge, and his success all came from Allah alone.
