The Story of Uzair in the Quran for Muslim Kids

The story of Uzair in the Quran for kids teaches something simple but powerful: Allah has full power over life and death, and nothing is too hard for Him.

Not even bringing a dead town, a dead donkey, or a person back to life. It is a gentle reminder that when something looks completely gone, Allah can restore it in an instant.

Before the story begins, here is something worth exploring with your child: why did Allah choose to show this lesson through a hundred years of sleep? Our Quran Tafseer for Kids course at Kids Learning Quran Academy helps children sit with a verse like this one and understand the meaning behind it, not just the words.

How Uzair Came Across a Ruined Town

Long ago, among the Children of Israel (Bani Israel), there lived a righteous and deeply knowledgeable man named Uzair. His name comes from the Hebrew “Ezra,” which means “helper.”

Scholars have different opinions about him; some say he was a prophet, others say he was a righteous scholar of his people, but every trustworthy account agrees on what happened next.

One quiet day, Uzair, peace be upon him, rode his donkey along a road he had travelled many times before, a road he knew well and had passed along on many earlier journeys.

How Uzair Wondered Whether the Ruined Town Could Return to Life

As Uzair travelled further, he came upon a town that had completely fallen apart. Its walls had crumbled to the ground.

Its rooftops had caved in. Not a single living soul remained. Uzair stopped his donkey and stood there, quietly amazed.

He wondered something many of us might wonder too: could a town like this ever be full of life again? The Quran tells us the exact words that crossed his heart at that moment. Here is that verse, so your child can hear Allah’s own words about it:

أَنَّىٰ يُحْيِي هَٰذِهِ اللَّهُ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا

Anna yuhyee hadhihi Allahu ba’da mawtiha “

How will Allah bring this to life after its death?” (Al-Baqarah 2:259)

How Allah Caused Uzair to Remain for One Hundred Years

Right after Uzair asked that question out loud, Allah caused him to fall into a deep sleep, not for one night, but for one hundred whole years.

Allah took his soul while he slept, then brought it back exactly when the hundred years had passed. His body stayed exactly as it was throughout that entire time.

His donkey, sadly, did not survive, and its bones lay scattered on the ground beside him.

It’s easy to imagine how strange this moment must have felt for Uzair, and it’s exactly the kind of scene that becomes unforgettable once a child can read it themselves in Arabic.

That’s the goal of our Quran Reading for Kids course, helping young readers sound out verses like this one letter by letter, so the Quran feels like their own.

How Uzair Discovered That One Hundred Years Had Passed

When Uzair opened his eyes, he had no idea that an entire century had passed. To him, it felt like he had simply drifted off for a short rest and had now woken up again, with nothing around him seeming any different at first glance.

Allah sent an angel to him in the form of a man, who came and asked him a simple, direct question, as if testing what Uzair himself believed had happened.

قَالَ كَمْ لَبِثْتَ ۖ قَالَ لَبِثْتُ يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍ

Qala kam labithta, qala labithtu yawman aw ba’da yawm

“He said, ‘How long have you remained?’ He said, ‘I have remained a day or part of a day.'” (Al-Baqarah 2:259)

Uzair truly believed he had only napped for an afternoon. Nothing about how he felt, how his body had rested, or how the light looked around him gave him any reason to think otherwise.

He answered honestly, with the simple, reasonable guess anyone would make after waking from a nap, having absolutely no idea what Allah was about to show him next.

How Allah Brought Uzair’s Donkey Back to Life

The angel told Uzair the truth: a full hundred years had passed, not a single day.

Then Allah showed him proof, so nothing was left to doubt. His food and drink had not spoiled or changed at all, even after a hundred years. Yet right beside him lay his donkey’s bare, scattered bones.

Then, right before Uzair’s eyes, something astonishing happened. The bones of the donkey began to move on their own, gathering back together until they took the shape of a donkey again.

Then flesh grew to cover them, then skin, then fur, until the donkey stood before him complete and alive, exactly as it had been.

Qala bal labithta mi’ata ‘aaminfandhur ila ta’aamika wa sharabika lam yatasannah wandhur ila himarik

“He said, ‘Rather, you have remained one hundred years. Look at your food and your drink — it has not changed with time. And look at your donkey…'” (Al-Baqarah 2:259)

Allah also told Uzair the reason behind this whole event: He wanted to make him a sign for all people, a living proof that would be remembered and told for generations, exactly as it still is today.

When everything became clear to him, Uzair said with certainty, “I know that Allah is over all things Competent.”

How Uzair Returned After One Hundred Years

Now Uzair understood. Everything the angel had told him, the hundred years, the untouched food, the donkey rebuilt bone by bone in front of his eyes, had made the truth impossible to doubt.

He climbed onto his living, breathing donkey and set off, riding back down the very same road toward the very town he had once seen lying empty and broken.

But this time, everything looked completely different; homes stood tall, gardens grew, and people went about their day as if nothing had ever happened.

For Uzair, riding into that town must have felt almost like stepping into a different world. He, of all people, knew exactly how broken this same place had looked, and yet here it was, fully alive again, just as Allah had shown him it could be.

How the People Responded to Uzair’s Return

Uzair began asking the townspeople about someone from long ago, a man named Uzair.

They told him that Uzair had passed away exactly a hundred years earlier. When he told them who he truly was, they could barely believe their eyes.

Uzair went back to teaching people the Torah, just as he once had, since he had memorized so much of it by heart.

Some people later went too far in honoring him for this, making a completely false claim.

وَقَالَتِ الْيَهُودُ عُزَيْرٌ ابْنُ اللَّهِ

Wa qalatil-yahoodu ‘Uzayrun ibnu Allah

“And the Jews said, ‘Uzair is the son of Allah.'” (At-Tawbah 9:30)

This claim about the prophet Uzair story was, and still is, entirely wrong. It goes against the very heart of Islam, which teaches that Allah is One, with no children, no partners, and nothing that resembles Him.

5 Lessons Kids Can Learn From the Story of Uzair

Uzair’s journey was never just about sleep or a donkey; it was about Allah showing His power in a way no one could argue with. Here are the lessons this story leaves for every young reader.

5 Lessons Kids Can Learn From the Story of Uzair
  1. Nothing is too hard for Allah: A ruined town, a dead donkey, and a man asleep for a century were all brought back to life. This shows children that Allah’s power has no limits at all.
  2. Trust Allah even when something looks impossible: Uzair didn’t doubt Allah’s ability; he simply wondered how it would happen. It’s healthy to be curious, as long as our trust in Allah stays firm.
  3. Signs from Allah are meant to be seen and remembered: Allah made Uzair’s hundred years a visible sign “for the people,” so that everyone who heard the story would remember Allah’s power. Encourage children to notice Allah’s signs around them too.
  4. Never say something about Allah that isn’t true: The people who later called Uzair “the son of Allah” crossed a serious line. This story teaches children to speak carefully and truthfully, especially about Allah.
  5. Knowledge is a gift from Allah worth protecting: Uzair had memorized so much of the Torah that he could rebuild it for his people from memory.

This is a beautiful reminder of why memorizing the Quran matters so much for Muslim children today, something our Online Quran Memorization Course for Kids is built to nurture step by step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which surah is the story of Uzair in the Quran which surah parents usually search for?

The main story appears in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 259. The claim that “Uzair is the son of Allah” is mentioned separately in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 30.

Was Uzair a prophet or a righteous man?

Scholars have held different views on this. Some considered him a prophet of Bani Israel, while others described him as a righteous, highly knowledgeable scholar rather than a prophet.

Why did Allah put Uzair to sleep for a hundred years?

Allah made this happen so Uzair, and everyone who ever heard his story, would see clear proof that Allah has the power to bring life after death, at any time.

No. That claim, mentioned in Surah At-Tawbah 9:30, is described in the Quran as false. Islam teaches that Allah has no children and no partners.
