The Story Of Prophet Zakariya In The Quran For Kids

The story of Zakariya in the Quran for kids teaches one gentle truth: no dua is ever too small or too late for Allah to answer. Prophet Zakariya (peace be upon him) was very old.

His hair had turned white, and he had no son to carry on his good work after him. Yet he never once stopped trusting that Allah could still bless him.

If your child loves stories about patient prophets who never gave up hope, at Kids Learning Quran Academy, we provide the Quran Tafseer for Kids course that helps them understand the deeper meaning behind ayahs like the ones in this beautiful story.

How Prophet Zakariya Kept His Hope in Allah as He Grew Old

Prophet Zakariya grew old and worried about who would come after him. His hair had turned fully white, and his body felt weak and tired.

He knew he would leave this world soon, but he had no son to carry his message forward.

His relatives were not people he trusted to protect the faith. He feared they might change the teachings after he was gone. So he carried this quiet worry in his heart, day after day.

The Quran describes his feeling in his own words:

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي وَهَنَ الْعَظْمُ مِنِّي وَاشْتَعَلَ الرَّأْسُ شَيْبًا وَلَمْ أَكُن بِدُعَائِكَ رَبِّ شَقِيًّا

“Qala rabbi innee wahana al-‘adhmu minnee washta’ala ar-ra’su shayban walam akun bidu’a-ika rabbi shaqiyya”

“He said, ‘My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white hair, and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy.'” (Maryam 19:4)

Even in his worry, Zakariya never doubted Allah. He simply kept his heart soft and his dua steady, calling on his Lord quietly, without complaint, just as he always had.

How Maryam’s Provision Reminded Zakariya of Allah’s Power

One day, Prophet Zakariya saw fresh summer fruit beside Maryam in winter. He was her guardian, so he often checked on her while she prayed in her small chamber.

This time, he found the fruit resting beside her, even though it was the middle of winter.

Surprised, he asked her where it came from:

قَالَ يَا مَرْيَمُ أَنَّىٰ لَكِ هَٰذَا ۖ قَالَتْ هُوَ مِنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَرْزُقُ مَن يَشَاءُ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ

“Qala ya Maryamu anna laki hatha, qalat huwa min ‘indillahi, innallaha yarzuqu man yasha’u bighayri hisab”

“He said, ‘O Mary, from where do you get this?’ She said, ‘It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account.'” (Al-Imran 3:37)

Seeing this again and again, year after year, filled Zakariya’s heart with certainty in Allah’s limitless power, a certainty that would soon shape his own greatest dua.

How Prophet Zakariya Prayed to Allah for a Child

Here, Prophet Zakariya prayed for a son, the moment that became the heart of the Zakariya story in the Quran. Watching Maryam’s miracle fruit, Zakariya realized something important.

If Allah could bring summer fruit in the middle of winter, He could surely give an old man and his elderly wife a child too.

Right there, Zakariya turned to Allah with a heartfelt dua:

رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً ۖ إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ

“Rabbi hab li min ladunka dhurriyyatan tayyibatan innaka samee’u ad-du’a”

“My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication.” (Al-Imran 3:38)

image 104

He also called out, in the words the Quran preserves for us:

رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِي فَرْدًا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ الْوَارِثِينَ

“Rabbi la tadharnee fardan wa anta khayrul-warithin”

“My Lord, do not leave me alone, while You are the best of inheritors.” (Al-Anbiya 21:89)

Zakariya wasn’t asking for wealth to be passed down. He was asking Allah for a son who would inherit his knowledge and continue guiding Bani Israel with wisdom, just as he had inherited that same trust from the prophets before him, all the way back to Prophet Yaqub.

This dua is really the heart of the story of Zakariya in the Quran for kids: a man who never gave up hope in Allah’s mercy, even after decades of waiting.

How Allah Gave Zakariya the Good News of Yahya

The angels told Zakariya his son would be named Yahya very soon after his dua. They told him that Allah had accepted his prayer, and that Prophet Zakariya’s son would carry a name no one had ever carried before him.

“Ya Zakariyya inna nubashshiruka bighulamin ismuhu Yahya lam naj’al lahu min qablu samiyya”

“O Zakariya, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be Yahya. We have not assigned that name to anyone before him.” (Maryam 19:7)

Zakariya was amazed. He asked Allah how this could happen, since he was so old and his wife could not have children.

He was not doubting Allah; he simply wanted to understand the wonder more, the way a heart grows fuller with awe, not less certain in belief.

Allah reminded him gently that giving him a child was no harder than the first time He had created Zakariya himself out of nothing at all.

Allah Gave Zakariya Three Days of Silence as a Sign

Allah made Zakariya unable to speak for three days as a sign, right after Zakariya asked for something he could feel in the moment.

Allah answered him gently, giving him a sign that touched his own body rather than the world outside.

“Qala rabbi ij’al lee ayatan, qala ayatuka alla tukallima an-nasa thalathata ayyamin illa ramza”

“He said, ‘My Lord, make for me a sign.’ He said, ‘Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three days except by gesture.'” (Al-Imran 3:41)

During those three days, Zakariya was completely healthy; his tongue simply would not move to speak with people, though he could still worship and remember Allah freely with his voice.

When he came out of his private chamber to his people, he could not speak to them directly, so he motioned to them by hand, telling them to glorify Allah morning and evening.

Allah Answered Zakariya’s Dua With Prophet Yahya

Allah answered the dua and blessed Zakariya with Yahya, exactly as He had promised.

His elderly wife, who had never been able to have children, carried and gave birth to a healthy son.

“Fastajabna lahu wa wahabna lahu Yahya wa aslahna lahu zawjah”

“So We answered him, and We gave him Yahya, and cured his wife for him.” (Al-Anbiya 21:90)

Once Zakariya could speak to people again, he spent his days worshipping Allah and teaching others with a clear, patient voice.

Yahya grew up to become a prophet himself, known for his sincerity, his wisdom even as a child, and his devotion to worship, truly the “good offspring” his father had once prayed for.

If you’d love your child to recite ayahs like these with confidence and correct pronunciation, our Quran Recitation Course for Kids is built exactly for that.
