Story of Prophet Lut (Lot) in the Quran for Muslim Kids

Prophet Lut’s (peace be upon him) story shows us something beautiful: Allah always stands by those who choose what is right, even when everyone around them chooses wrong. 

It is a story about courage, kindness to guests, and trusting Allah when things feel hard.

Prophet Lut Grew Up with Prophet Ibrahim and Learned Faith

Lut (peace be upon him) was the nephew of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). His father passed away when he was young, so Lut grew up in the home of his grandfather and his uncle Ibrahim.

He was surrounded by faith in the One God at a time when almost everyone around them worshipped idols made of stone and wood.

When the people of Babylon tried to harm Ibrahim, Lut was one of the very few who believed in him. He stood by his uncle and later left his homeland together with him, migrating to a new land in search of a place where they could worship Allah freely and safely.

This early part of the story teaches children something important before the main events even begin: faith is often something we choose, even when very few people around us are choosing it too.

Prophet Lut Is Sent to Guide the People of Sodom

Ibrahim asked Lut to travel to a city called Sodom, near the Dead Sea. It was a busy trading city with many people, roads that connected distant lands, and a great deal of wealth passing through its markets. On the surface, it may have looked like a prosperous place to live.

But Sodom had a terrible problem, one that no amount of wealth or trade could hide.

The people there had turned away from Allah completely. They did wrong to travelers, robbed people on the roads, and behaved badly toward one another. 

Not a single person in the whole city believed in Allah, except for Lut and his two daughters. That is the position Prophet Lut found himself in, and yet Allah still sent him there, because someone needed to remind the people of what they had forgotten.

The People of Sodom Turned to Serious Wrongdoing 

Allah tells us in the Quran that the people of Sodom invented a shameful sin that no people before them had ever done. It was something new, a wrongdoing that no nation before them had ever committed so openly.

Lut warned them again and again, but they refused to listen or change their ways. He did not warn them once and give up. 

He returned to his people repeatedly, using every gentle method he could think of, hoping that somewhere among them there might be a heart willing to listen.

Prophet Lut Called His People to Fear and Obey Allah 

Even though Lut was a stranger among them, having come from a different land, he spoke to his people gently, like a caring brother trying to protect his own family from harm:

أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ (162) إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ (163) فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ (164)

Ala tattaqoon (162) Inni lakum rasoolun ameen (163) Fattaqullaha wa atee’oon (164)

“Will you not fear Allah? Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. So fear Allah and obey me.” (Ash-Shu’ara 26:162-164)

But instead of listening, the people grew angry, treating his honesty as an insult, as though the mere existence of someone who disagreed with their behavior was something to be resented.

The People of Sodom Threatened to Expel Prophet Lut 

The people of Sodom told Lut they would throw him out of the city simply because he and his family stayed pure and honest. 

To them, goodness had become the “crime.” Instead of being ashamed of their own wrongdoing, they turned their anger toward the one person trying to help them see it.

Feeling alone and unsupported, Lut turned to Allah for help rather than losing hope:

قَالَ رَبِّ انصُرْنِي عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْمُفْسِدِينَ 

Qala Rabbi-nsurni ‘ala al-qawmi-l-mufsideen 

“[Lut] said: ‘My Lord, help me against the corrupting people.'” (Al-Ankabut 29:30)

This single dua carries a powerful lesson. When Lut had exhausted every human effort available to him, he did not despair. 

He turned directly to Allah, trusting that even when people abandon what is right, Allah never abandons those who remain faithful to Him.

Angels Visited Prophet Ibrahim with Good News and a Mission 

Allah heard Lut’s dua. He sent angels, disguised as young men, first to Ibrahim’s home, many miles away from Sodom.

They gave Ibrahim wonderful news: he would soon have a son named Ishaq, and later a grandson named Yaqub, a promise of new generations of believers to come, even in Ibrahim’s old age.

But the angels also told Ibrahim that they were going to destroy the wicked city where Lut lived. The same visit that brought Ibrahim joy about his own family also brought him heavy news about his nephew’s city.

Prophet Ibrahim Kindly Pleaded for the People to Be Spared

Ibrahim loved his nephew and worried for his safety. He gently asked the angels whether the city could be spared if there were still believers inside, showing a heart that hoped for mercy even for people who had done great wrong.

This moment reveals something beautiful about Ibrahim’s character. Even knowing how badly the people of Sodom had behaved, his first instinct was to hope for their forgiveness rather than to wish for their punishment.

The angels reassured him that Lut and his family would be saved, except for his wife, who had chosen not to believe and had sided with the people of the city rather than with her own husband’s faith.

The Angels Arrived as Guests at Prophet Lut’s Home 

The same angels, still looking like handsome young travelers, arrived in Sodom and came to Lut’s house. When Lut’s daughter saw them, she rushed to warn her father, afraid of what the people of the city might try to do to such attractive young guests.

Lut felt his heart tighten with worry. He could not turn away guests who had come to his home, since hospitality was something Allah commands of every believer, yet he feared for their safety the moment he understood what kind of city they had walked into.

Prophet Lut Tried to Protect His Guests from the People 

Word spread quickly, and the people came running toward Lut’s house. Lut stood at his door, pleading with his people to fear Allah and leave his guests alone, but no one would help him.

قَالَ لَوْ أَنَّ لِي بِكُمْ قُوَّةً أَوْ آوِي إِلَى رُكْنٍ شَدِيدٍ

Qala law anna li bikum quwwatan aw awi ila ruknin shadeed

“He said, ‘If only I had against you some power or could take refuge in a strong support.'” (Hud 11:80)

In this moment, Lut expressed a very human feeling. Even a prophet, full of faith and courage, can feel the weight of standing alone against a whole crowd. 

Yet what mattered most was not how strong Lut felt in that instant, but how strong Allah’s help turned out to be.

The Guests Revealed They Are Angels Sent by Allah 

Inside the house, Lut noticed his guests were completely calm, unafraid of the danger outside.

That is when they told him the truth: they were angels, sent by Allah to carry out His command. As the people tried to force their way in, Angel Jibril struck their eyes, and they suddenly could not see at all, stumbling away in confusion.

In an instant, the “strong support” that Lut had wished for arrived, not from any human army, but directly from Allah, exactly when it was needed most.

Allah Commanded Prophet Lut to leave the City by Night

The angels told Lut to gather his family and leave the city quietly before dawn. He was warned not to look back and to leave his wife behind, since she did not believe.

فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِّنَ اللَّيْلِ وَلاَ يَلْتَفِتْ مِنكُمْ أَحَدٌ 

Fa-asri bi-ahlika bi-qit’in mina-l-layli wa la yaltafit minkum ahad 

“So travel with your family during a portion of the night, and let not any among you look back.” (Hud 11:81)

Lut and his believing family left safely just before the sun rose:

إِلاَّ آلَ لُوطٍ نَّجَّيْنَاهُم بِسَحَرٍ 

Illa aala Lutin najjaynahum bisahar 

“Except the family of Lut – We saved them before dawn.” (Al-Qamar 54:34)

There is something gentle and hopeful about this detail: the family’s safety came before dawn, right at the last dark moment of the night. 

It is a reminder that Allah’s help often arrives exactly when it seems the night could not get any darker.

Allah’s Punishment Fell Upon the City at Sunrise

At sunrise, the city was overturned and destroyed completely, just as Allah had promised. The very ground the people of Sodom trusted to hold them safely could not protect them once Allah’s decree arrived.

It became a powerful reminder for every generation that came after that no matter how many people follow a wrongdoing, it never becomes right. Numbers and popularity do not turn a wrong action into a good one.
