When the baby turned out to be a girl, her mother named her Maryam and asked Allah to protect her.

وَإِنِّي أُعِيذُهَا بِكَ وَذُرِّيَّتَهَا مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ 

Wa inni u’eezuha bika wa dhurriyyataha minash-shaytanir-rajeem 

“And indeed, I seek refuge for her in You, and [for] her descendants, from Satan, the expelled.” (Al-Imran 3:36)

How Prophet Zakariya Cared for Maryam in the Mihrab 

Prophet Zakariya, peace be upon him, cared for Maryam inside the sacred mihrab, a small room set aside for worship. Allah accepted Maryam most beautifully.

ٍhe grew up under the care of a righteous prophet who taught her patience, worship, and closeness to Allah from a very young age.

Every time he visited her, he found fresh food waiting for her, fruit of summer appearing in winter, and fruit of winter appearing in summer. Amazed, he asked her where it came from.

This is how the Quran describes that wonderful moment:

قَالَ يَا مَرْيَمُ أَنَّى لَكِ هَذَا قَالَتْ هُوَ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَرْزُقُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ 

Qala ya Maryamu anna laki hadha qalat huwa min ‘indillah, innallaha yarzuqu man yasha’u bighayri hisab 

“He said, ‘O Maryam, from where is this [coming] to you?’ She said, ‘It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account.'” (Al-Imran 3:37)

This moment planted a seed of unshakable trust in Maryam’s heart. Long before she faced her hardest trial, she had already witnessed with her own eyes that Allah’s provision can arrive in ways no human effort could ever explain. 

How Jibreel Gave Maryam the News of Prophet Isa

Jibreel came to Maryam with wonderful news, though at first she had no idea who he was. 

One day, she had gone away from her family to a quiet place facing east when a stranger suddenly appeared before her. 

She was frightened and quickly asked Allah to protect her, not knowing that this stranger was Jibreel.

قَالَ إِنَّمَا أَنَا رَسُولُ رَبِّكِ لِأَهَبَ لَكِ غُلَامًا زَكِيًّا 

Qala innama ana rasulu rabbiki li-ahaba laki ghulaman zakiyya 

“He said, ‘I am only the messenger of your Lord, to give you a pure boy.'” (Maryam 19:19)

Maryam wondered how this could happen, since she had never been married. Jibreel told her that for Allah, this was easy, and that her son would be a sign for all people, a mercy sent to guide humanity. 

Maryam’s very first response to a strange visitor was to turn to Allah for safety, not to panic or to react on her own.

How Maryam Faced Childbirth With Trust in Allah 

Maryam faced the pain of childbirth all alone, far from her family and her home. 

She had stayed away from her people so they would not speak badly of her, and when the labor pains came, she held onto the trunk of a palm tree, feeling frightened and completely alone.

قَالَتْ يَالَيْتَنِي مِتُّ قَبْلَ هَذَا وَكُنْتُ نَسْيًا مَنسِيًّا 

Qalat ya laytani mittu qabla hadha wa kuntu nasyan mansiyya 

“She said, ‘Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten.'” (Maryam 19:23)

Maryam did not despair of Allah’s mercy; she expressed her exhaustion, and relief came to her almost immediately after.

How Allah Comforted Maryam With Water and Fresh Dates 

Right in her moment of fear, Allah sent comfort with water and fresh dates. 

A voice called out from beneath her, telling her not to be sad and pointing her to a stream that Allah had placed nearby.

أَلَّا تَحْزَنِي قَدْ جَعَلَ رَبُّكِ تَحْتَكِ سَرِيًّا وَهُزِّي إِلَيْكِ بِجِذْعِ النَّخْلَةِ تُسَاقِطْ عَلَيْكِ رُطَبًا جَنِيًّا 

Alla tahzani qad ja’ala rabbuki tahtaki sariyya, wa huzzi ilayki bijidh’in-nakhlati tusaqit ‘alayki rutaban janiyya 

“Do not grieve; your Lord has provided a stream beneath you. And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.” (Maryam 19:24-25)

How Baby Isa Defended Maryam From the Cradle 

Baby Isa spoke from the cradle to defend his mother the moment her people began to doubt her. 

Maryam had carried her baby back to her people, staying silent just as she had been told, and when they saw the baby, they accused her unfairly. 

She simply pointed to her son, and they laughed, asking how a baby could answer them, until Isa spoke.

قَالَ إِنِّي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ آتَانِيَ الْكِتَابَ وَجَعَلَنِي نَبِيًّا 

Qala inni ‘abdullahi ataniyal kitaba wa ja’alani nabiyya. 

“He said, ‘Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.'” (Maryam 19:30)

Everyone was amazed. Maryam’s name was cleared, and Allah’s promise came true in front of everyone who had doubted her.
