How Allah Separated the Heavens and the Earth 

Allah joined the heavens and the earth as one solid mass, with nothing yet parted between them. At first, they were pressed tightly together, like a single piece.

Before we read the ayah itself, it helps to picture this: imagine the whole sky and the whole earth pressed together as one single mass, with nothing yet spread apart. Then Allah split them apart.

أَوَلَمْ يَرَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَنَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ أَفَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ 

Awa lam yaral ladhina kafaru annas-samawati wal-arda kanata ratqan fafataqnahuma wa ja’alna minal-ma’i kulla shay’in hayy, afala yu’minun 

“Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?” (Al-Anbiya 21:30)

How Allah Created the Heavens From Smoke 

After the heavens and the earth were parted, smoke rises and becomes the sky above us, soft and still unformed at this stage. Allah then spoke to the sky and the earth directly, and they answered Him.

ثُمَّ اسْتَوَىٰ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَهِيَ دُخَانٌ فَقَالَ لَهَا وَلِلْأَرْضِ ائْتِيَا طَوْعًا أَوْ كَرْهًا قَالَتَا أَتَيْنَا طَائِعِينَ 

Thumma istawa ilas-sama’i wa hiya dukhanun faqala laha wa lil-ardi i’tiya taw’an aw karhan qalata atayna ta’i’in 

“Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, ‘Come, willingly or by compulsion.’ They said, ‘We came willingly.'” (Fussilat 41:11)

Once the sky had taken shape from this smoke, Allah did not leave the earth beneath it bare. He set mountains firmly into the ground.

Allah measured out, with perfect balance, everything the earth would ever need to support life, so that nothing would be missing for those who came after.

How Allah Created the Universe in Six Days 

The story of creation in the Quran tells us that Allah created the universe in six days and rose over His Throne only once this careful work is finished, not because He needed the time, but to teach us that even great things are built with patience and order.

Scholars who explained this part of the creation story in the Quran describe it in stages: two days for shaping the earth, two more days for placing its mountains and measuring its provisions, and two final days for raising the seven heavens above it. 

Together, these stages make up the six days mentioned throughout the Quran.

After finishing this careful work, Allah rose above His Throne in a way that suits His majesty, far above anything we can imagine.

How Allah Created Prophet Adam From Clay 

Once the skies and the earth were ready, Allah shaped Prophet Adam from clay and water as a new kind of creation, a being unlike the angels or the animals.

He gathered the clay, mixed it with water, and formed it with His own hands. Before this new form ever moved, it passed through its own quiet stages, exactly as the Quran describes.

Before we read the ayah itself, it helps to picture the clay changing shape the way wet mud slowly dries in the sun. This next verse describes exactly what that clay had become.

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِنْ حَمَإٍ مَسْنُونٍ 

Wa laqad khalaqnal-insana min salsalin min hama’in masnun 

“And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud.” (Al-Hijr 15:26)

The clay slowly dried, becoming like pottery that rings when tapped, before Allah gave this new form something no other creation had received.

How Allah Gave Life to Prophet Adam 

Allah breathed life into Prophet Adam the moment His spirit entered this clay figure, and it became alive.

This was Prophet Adam, peace be upon him, the very first human being. His fingers moved, his eyes opened, and he sneezed, and Allah taught him to say “Alhamdulillah.”

Why the Angels Bowed to Adam and Iblis Refused 

Allah then commanded the angels to bow down to Adam, not in worship of Adam, but in honor of Allah’s command and the special place Adam held.  Every angel obeyed at once.

But one being among the jinn, called Iblis, refused out of pride. He believed he was better than Adam because he was made of fire, while Adam was made of clay.

How Allah Taught Adam the Names of All Things 

Allah taught Adam the names of everything before Adam even left Paradise, giving him a remarkable gift no other creation had received. 

When Allah then asked the angels to name these same things, they could not, but Adam could, by Allah’s teaching.

This showed the angels that Adam had been given something precious, and it is one of the clearest quran creation story verses about human potential and the gift of learning.

What Happened to Adam and Hawwa in Paradise? 

Adam and Hawwa lived in Paradise before coming to Earth, enjoying its blessings together with only one tree forbidden to them. 

Allah had created Hawwa as a companion for Adam from his own self, so that his heart would find peace with her.

Shaytan whispered to them until they ate from that tree, forgetting Allah’s warning. 

Because of this, they were sent down to the earth, not as a punishment without mercy, but as the beginning of humankind’s journey of striving, seeking forgiveness, and returning to Allah.
